In 2023, weather-related disasters in 6 states led the IRS to extend the tax filing dates for many residents of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Mississippi, and New York who were caused hardship by winter storms, flooding, landslides, and mudslides.
While New York residents were given an extension until May 15, Arkansas and Mississippi residents in federally declared disaster areas still have until July 31 to file returns and make payments for their individual and business taxes.
Additionally, certain California, Georgia, and Alabama residents now have until Oct. 16 to file and pay their business and individual taxes.
If you reside in an area that has been granted a tax extension, you will also be allowed to continue to make additional contributions to your health savings accounts and IRAs until the extension deadline. Further, affected taxpayers will be able to submit their final estimated quarterly payments for 2022, which were originally due January 17, 2023, with their 2022 tax returns by the revised deadlines.
All of the extensions are automatic and do not require any action on the part of taxpayers. It’s a good idea to remain alert, however, in the event that you may be accidentally sent a notice regarding late penalties. If, mistakenly, a late penalty is charged, then it is appropriate to call the IRS to ask for it to be abated.
California residents and business owners in the following counties are automatically eligible for the October 16 extension: Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Lake, Los Angeles, Madera, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Orange, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Sierra, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Trinity, Tulare, Tuolumne and Yuba.
